CityNews has featured a two-part series on femicide and domestic violence against women, broadcast on June 10 and 11, 2024.
In the first installment, journalist Cynthia Mulligan interviewed a woman whose daughter, Sahra Bulle, was killed a year ago after suffering alleged abuse for over a decade. Her former husband has been charged with first-degree murder.
“Mother wants to give her murdered daughter a voice”
For the second part of the feature, CityNews featured an in-depth examination of the rising numbers in femicide and the crisis currently being experienced by shelters, at maximum capacity and forced to turn women away.
“Data shows a grim rise in femicides in Ontario”
Cynthia also shared some insights on why the numbers are trending higher since the pandemic, and why it is not always possible for women to escape an abuser before she experiences lethal violence.
“Hundreds of women being turned away from emergency shelters”
