YWCA Empty Bowls 2023

19th annual YWCA Empty Bowls raises over $33,000 in support of YWCA Nourish Food Programs

Peterborough, ON – A grand total of $33,104 was raised in support of YWCA Nourish Food Programs at the 19th annual YWCA Empty Bowls event held at The Venue on Saturday, February 25th. Ticket holders at this year’s event received a handcrafted ceramic or wooden bowl and a restaurant coupon card, featuring discounts from 12 participating local restaurants.

“Our hearts are so full,” says YWCA Executive Director Kim Dolan. “When I pause to think about all the people and all the time that goes into making this event possible year after year, I’m overwhelmed by the good in our community. Thank you to everyone who carved, created, sponsored, donated, attended, or lent a hand in order to help folks experiencing food insecurity.

“Your support of Nourish means so much to the hundreds of people in our community who access our healthy food workshops, advocacy training, community gardens, and food boxes every month.”

Please support this year’s participating restaurants, including Amandala’s, Baked 4U, Black Honey, Central Smith, Fresh Dreams, Naked Chocolate, Pastry Peddler, Sam’s Place, That’s a Wrap, and The Cheesy Fromage.

YWCA Empty Bowls was generously supported by members of the Kawartha Potters Guild and Kawartha Woodturners Guild, and sponsored by Kawartha Cardiology, Cornerstone Family Dentistry, The Venue, Pure Country 105, Move 99.7, The Peterborough Examiner, Peterborough This Week, KawarthaNOW, The Wolf 101.5 FM, Global Peterborough and Fresh 100.5

About YWCA Peterborough Haliburton and Nourish

YWCA Peterborough Haliburton is an equity-seeking organization dedicated to ending gender-based violence in all its forms.

Our experience has taught us that women are often faced with the harsh reality of poverty after escaping abuse, which is why our food work extends beyond our shelter as we engage with women and families in the community. Access to affordable, healthy food, community gardens and food-skills workshops not only enhances food security, but also serves to reduce social isolation and build healthy relationships.

By harnessing the power of food, the YWCA Nourish Food Programs bring people together to build a collective sense of belonging, while working toward the systemic changes required to end food insecurity and poverty.

We are proud to collaborate with a number of organizations including Peterborough Public Health and GreenUp to support the creation of a vibrant network of places dedicated to eating, cooking, growing, and advocating for good food throughout Peterborough City and County.
